Improving Access to Clean Water and Sanitation in the Rutshuru East Conflict Zone

In the Rutshuru East conflict zone of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Amani Kwetu’s WASH department is embarking on the « Inclusive Wash Program » to address the urgent need for improved water and sanitation facilities. This program aims to ensure that everyone, including people with disabilities, has access to clean water and proper sanitation.

To assess the current situation, our team conducted surveys in at least 3,500 households in the city of Kiwanja, as well as in 3 schools and 2 markets. The purpose of these surveys was to evaluate the quality of taps and pipes and determine their accessibility to all members of the community.

The findings from these surveys provided valuable insights into the health conditions in the city of Kiwanja/Rutshuru. It allowed us to identify the factors contributing to the spread of illnesses in this area, which has recently received refugees. By understanding how these illnesses manifest and spread, we can develop targeted interventions to address them effectively.

During our two weeks in the field, we visited school toilets and went door-to-door in various households. It became evident that urgent action is required to improve health education, protection, and overall healthcare in this population. Unfortunately, the health workers are no longer able to provide the necessary support, leaving it up to organizations like ours to fill the gap.

We observed instances where mothers would sell food in markets without proper hygiene practices. Doughnuts were left uncovered, and vegetables were displayed on dirty surfaces. This lack of awareness and education contributes to the suffering of the population. It is clear that we need to take action and review the public health system in this territory while reinforcing preventive measures at all levels.

As the Head of the WASH Department at Amani Kwetu International, I am a young leader, field worker, and nurse by training. I have witnessed the urgent need for improved healthcare firsthand. It is our responsibility as youth associations to prioritize the health of our population and take the necessary steps to address these challenges.

To achieve better health outcomes, we must focus on reorganizing and improving the overall healthcare system in the Rutshuru East conflict zone. This includes strengthening preventive measures, providing health education, and ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare services.

In conclusion, the Inclusive Wash Program initiated by Amani Kwetu’s WASH department is a crucial step towards improving access to clean water and sanitation in the Rutshuru East conflict zone. By conducting surveys and identifying the challenges faced by the community, we are able to develop targeted interventions that address the specific needs of the population. It is our duty to work towards a better future, where everyone has access to better health and well-being.
